Ruby Seagofirst quilt, made over the course of the first round of A QUILT IS SOMETHING HUMAN- a life changing course not only in terms of building my tangible skill set but of giving language to the concept of creating my life through the lens of quilting. i am constructing my life in patterns, slow work with my hands, spending time every day in ritual and practice and prayer, whether i am working on a literal quilt or not. this is my first quilt but not my last- i am always in a period of gestating, metabolizing, creating safety and inquiry for the next quiltfriend to emerge through and to me with my higher power (a conscious, attentive, responsive universe) as the fabric, batting, thread, and backing....

Carly - Never before participating in A Quilt is Something Human, was I able to experience my own mistakes with humour rather than shame. Marlee sets a beautiful tone of curiosity and exploration, and it works. This class was powerful medicine for my recovering perfectionist heart, and now all my friends give me their old sheets to slice up and make new again.

Lauren Levitt - This is my third crib size quilt since completing the class. This one is particularly special to me because I made it for my mom for mothers day. She gave me fabric and handkerchiefs from her mother, my grandmother, who passed away in October 2019. My mom doesn't use handkerchiefs and didn't want to throw them away, so it was really special to get to repurpose an heirloom into something that my mom can actually use!

Anisha Chirmule - One of my favorites that I just loved making. Marlees quilt class was exactly what I needed and the gift of it being virtual made it even more incredible. Having never quilted before, this class taught me the fundamentals of how to troubleshoot and get curious about creating pieces that would last for years to come. The part I could have never predicted when signing up, is I got to meet and connect with folks from all over the country and world and build friendships that keep supporting my quilting path! ♥️

Sam Williams - A quilt is something human is something real human. Marlee and Christi provide and create such a wonderful space for community learning, honoring, and sharing.Though I was familiar with certain fiber and textile arts already (knitting mostly) this quilt specific class, and the method Marlee and Christi teach became an exciting new tool in artmaking. The improvisational method Marlee encourages is great for exploration, and really helped me be kind to myself and find fun in the process of quiltmaking. It's so nice to have learned a method of making where I don't feel like I need to separate "art" and "craft." It was also a really great way to get to know my sewing machine!Reconciling the ancestral history of the respective diasporas — of which I'm a child — I found myself fascinated by the heirlooms handed down through generations in the southern United States. With both an old and growing family, it has been so special to have something to build as a meditation on connection, ancestral history, chosen family and also show love and appreciation in an enduring way. I'm excited to be able to gift my human quilt to a new (gemini) baby human during this weird time of relearning connection. This class has made my cancer-moon-ruled heart sing, engaged my gemini mars, delighted my sagittarian saturn, and entertained my 9th house aries venus endlessly.Basically, thanks to this class, I'm obsessed with quilting now and it's all I think about and want to do.

Kristin Texeira - I came to the A QUILT IS SOMETHING HUMAN class hoping to find a community to sit, share and grow with. Marlee provides a warm and safe space to gather. Step-by-step skills are demonstrated, history of patterns and place are shared, all questions are welcomed. My favorite parts are the welcome introductions and final project shares. It is beautiful to see the transformation on everyone's face from the first day of class to the end. This class allows us to gather during a time when human connection is so deeply craved and it yields quilts of all kinds and the truest person-to-person connections. Grateful.

Chloe Chappe - I took A Quit is Something Human in January 2021. Having been through the last year without any real type of creative community, this class felt very special. Apart from the excitement of learning a new skill, I got to commune with other people learning at the same time - which isn't something you can get from watching a youtube video!! Although zoom is not my preferred realm of connection, the medium leant itself to cozy breakout rooms where small groups of us got to sew together, chat, and show each other the progress we'd made on our quilt. Marlee's teaching style is silly, approachable, kind and inspiring. Her understanding of improvisation in her dance practice translates seamlessly into the quilting realm. Of course teaching requires a bit of structure, but the way she introduces techniques only to let us watch each other do them is her magic. I still can't believe I made a quilt!! I didn't even realize I could sew!

Erin - As someone who had made quilts before, A Quilt is Something Human unblocked a quilter's block I didn't realize I had!! Quilt class is the best thing to look forward to every week and seeing my classmates' work was always so so inspiring and never felt competitive. Quilt class is a great idea for everyone!

Magpieo - The best gift I have given myself was signing up for A Quilt is Something Human.  The class gave me space to play and explore, and helped me relax perfectionist pressures + fears. Marlee Grace is a wonderful and welcoming facilitator and frames quilting + making in a very approachable way.

Zoe Andrikidis - This is the quilt I completed in the class and I couldn't have done it without the support of Marlee and my class mates!!! Having an opportunity to connect with people across the internet air waves in some of the darkest times of the pandemic was truly magical. I loved this class and could (and will) rave about it forever.

Leif - This quilt class was everything I didn't know I needed to get freer in my creative process (and beyond!) - the classroom environment was playful, exploratory, and deliciously and ecstatically supportive. I can't wait to dream up more blanket beauties to share with all these rad new quilting pals. Deep gratitude to Marlee for shaping this magical space!
